Chevy announces 35,500 pound max tow rating for the 2020 Silverado HD! | Landers Chevrolet of Joplin

When you’ve got the biggest loads to tow and haul, nothing but a heavy duty truck will do. And when it comes to being king of the hill when it comes to the ability to tow the biggest loads, Chevrolet just put more than a shot across the bow of the 2019 Ram Heavy Duty and 2020 Ford Super Duty with the announcement that the 2020 Silverado HD will feature best-in-class maximum tow rating of 35,500 pounds! That’s more than Ram, more than Ford!

“We set out to make the best HD trucks on the market, bar none,” said Jaclyn McQuaid, chief engineer, Silverado HD. “We increased towing capabilities across the line, not just for dually buyers. We added class-leading towing technologies, such as 15 available camera views1, to make trailering more convenient, whether pulling a large cargo trailer or fifth-wheel camper. And we made a host of changes to make tasks easier.”

The literal heart of that incredible towing capacity is the next generation of Chevrolet’s unstoppable 6.6-liter Duramax turbodiesel engine. One of two engines available in the all-new 2020 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD and 3500HD, the 6.6-liter Duramax churns out an incredible 445 horsepower and 910 lb.-ft. of tow-hungry torque. The engine is backed by an all-new Allison ten-speed automatic that’s been upgraded to withstand the most punishing towing situations. From there, every drivetrain component from the transmission to the wheels has been re-engineered to survive in conditions that would send any other truck to the scrapheap.

The result of all that legendary GM innovation? How about a whopping 52 percent increase in maximum towing when compared to the previous Silverado Heavy Duty model

“The 6.6L Duramax diesel and Allison transmission is a legendary combination in the HD truck market with proven durability and capability that our customers expect,” said McQuaid. “For 2020, we made the combination even better and upgraded nearly every driveline component. As a result, we will deliver all 910 lb-ft of torque to the ground in first gear.”

Built for the world’s most extreme conditions, the 2020 Silverado 2500HD and 3500HD survived over 2000 hours of testing in conditions from the searing deserts of the southwest to the freezing wastelands above the Arctic Circle. For example, the 6.6-liter Duramax turbodiesel features a groundbreaking after-run cooling system that keeps the fan and water pump running for up to 15 minutes after the truck is stopped, helping cool down the internal engine components gradually and helping everything from rubber seals to pistons live longer, for more years of service. When the truck reaches an optimal temperature, the system shuts off.

The standard engine in the 2020 Silverado HD is the redesigned 6.6-liter gasoline V8, producing 401 horsepower and 464 lb.-ft. of torque, and backed by a six-speed heavy duty automatic. The engine delivers up to 22 percent more torque and 18 percent more maximum towing capacity when compared to the standard gasoline engine in the 2019 Silverado.
